Summary Note |
Julie is setting off to travel the length and breadth of the UK on Britain's dramatic coastal railway to discover how much of its seaside-dwelling nation still depends on the rails. Julie finds out that the coast is a magnet for pioneers, rebels and renegades. She meets descendants of pioneering men and women and marvels at the historic feats of engineering and coastal architecture. In the series she travels along four of the most dramatic stretches of coastal railway main lines and branches. First the Highland Line in Western Scotland often quoted as the most scenic train line in the world. Next a Victorian triumph the East Coast line from Newcastle to Edinburgh that links England and Scotland. Then the Great Western from London to Penzance with its stunning coastal path through Devon and Cornwall. And finally, the train enthusiasts much-loved North Wales lines that take her from Aberystwyth through to Liverpool. Its a journey she immerses herself in, meeting the local characters and marvelling in the adventure, confirming that Julie is truly a national treasure. |
