Summary Note |
It was the winter of 1934, the height of the Depression, and thousands of the men and women of Australia were on the roads. They had no job, they were homeless, their children were hungry - there was no choice but to take to the track in search of work. Trudging the back roads in old carts or broken down motor vehicles, the "battlers" roamed from town to town. It was a life of dole-book rations, hardship and deprivation, but also of laughter, kindness and camaraderie. |
