Summary Note |
Middlemarch is set in early nineteenth century England and charts the impact of the Industrial Revolution on the town as it divides its population into two opposing factions: the conservatives and the liberals. The major themes are the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism and self-interest, religion and hypocrisy, political reform and education. Eliot contrasts the courtships and marriages of Dorothea and Casaubon, with Rosamond and Lydgate to show how their self-delusions and expectations of courtship are shattered by the day-to-day difficulties of married life. The characters project onto their partners the qualities they seek in marriage. This masterpiece of English literature presents the ambiguities of moral choice, uses imagery of darkness and light, reveals class differences and the effect of education and study on an individual's life. The two major life choices of marriage and vocation govern the narrative. |
